In these challenging times, teaching children to think critically and reflectively and be compassionate, responsible, and caring citizens is a huge undertaking. Now, more than ever, children need to develop strong social-emotional skills and learn to think deeply, ask questions, connect, and reflect on their learning. In this webinar series, BC educator and author Adrienne Gear, explores effective ways to build critical thinking in your classroom as well as helping your students develop a more positive self-identity and greater global awareness. Using her book Powerful Understanding as the foundation, Adrienne will walk you through ways to deepen your students’ understanding of themselves, others, and the world.

Session 1 – Introduction
This session will focus on:

• Reading, Thinking, Metacognition
• Critical Thinking
• Social-Emotional Skills

Session 2 – Understanding SELF
This session will focus on:

• Developing a strong, positive self-identity
• Lessons include: my name, family, grandparents, family traditions and culture, feelings, moral compass, hopes and dreams.

Session 3 – Understanding OTHERS
This session will focus on:

• Building and maintaining positive relationships
  Lessons include: friendship, inclusion, diversity, kindness, gratitude, empathy, and community.

Session 4 – Understanding the WORLD
This session will focus on:

• Developing a deeper and more active understanding of global citizenship
• Lessons include: global education, global education, global citizenship, global justice, global footprint, and privilege and poverty.
